Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness came out the other week and immediately became the biggest hit of 2022 yet, surprising no one. Now, in its second weekend, the Marvel movie picked up another $61 million, which is a lot, but it represents a drop of 67%. Should Marvel be worried?

Probably not, at least not right away. Doctor Strange 2 has already made nearly $700 million at the worldwide box office and will probably keep chugging for a while. Also, as Deadline reports, steep drop-offs have become the norm for recent Marvel movies, with Spider-Man: No Way Home sinking by 67.5% and Black Widow by 67.8%. And No Way Home has made nearly $2 billion, so a drop in the second weekend need not spell doom. Somehow, some way, Marvel will survive.

That said, this could become a problem for the studio down the road if enthusiasm for their properties flags in general, but right now I don’t think they have much to worry about.

Doctor Strange 2 box office falls hard in second weekend

Nothing else touched Doctor Strange at the box office this weekend. Animated comedy  The Bad Guys made nearly $7 million and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 picked up another $4.5 million. Here’s the full list:

  1. Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness
  2. The Bad Guys
  3. Sonic The Hedgehog 2
  4. Firestarter
  5. Everything Everywhere All At Once
  6. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets Of Dumbledore
  7. The Lost City
  8. The Northman
  9. Family Camp
  10. The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent

We probably won’t see anything dominate like Doctor Strange 2 again until…well, until Thor: Love and Thunder comes out in July.
