The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Andor, The Acolyte…there are no shortage of Star Wars TV shows in production over at Disney+ these days. But why have one hundred Star Wars shows when you could have one hundred and one? And the latest, as-yet-untitled series will be helmed by none other than Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts.
This info comes from Vanity Fair, which also has a synopsis for the series:
"The show takes place during the post–’Return of the Jedi’ reconstruction that follows the fall of the Empire, the same as ‘The Mandalorian,’ but its plot remains a secret. It’s created and executive-produced by director Jon Watts and writer Chris Ford, who made ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ for Marvel. A casting notice has called for four children, around 11 to 12 years old. Inside Lucasfilm, the show is being described as a galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s."
So it’s a little something for the young Star Wars fans in your life, or the kids who are not yet fans but could be with the right marketing push. Disney does love to cover its bases.
The dawn of the Star Wars Television Universe
I mentioned a bunch of the Star Wars shows Disney has in development above. Several are set in the same basic time period: The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka and now this new show. The Mandalorian, Ahsoka and The Book of Boba Fett have already crossed over with each other, and I assume that Disney has similar plans for this new series. It’s trying to make a little Star Wars Television Universe over here.
Time will tell if that’s a good idea. While we wait for more info, the next Star Wars series, Obi-Wan Kenobi, premieres on Disney+ on May 27. That one is set years before the rest of these series, so don’t expect any crossovers there.
