Doctor Who has been all over the news lately after the announcement that Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will be taking over for Jodie Whittaker as the next Doctor. It’s all very exciting, and as a Whovian, I can’t wait for the next chapter to begin, especially with former showrunner Russell T Davies stepping in to take the reins once again.
Speaking with Radio Times, Davies shared that he has “immense plans” for Gatwa’s 14th Doctor. What he means by that is unknown, but I can only imagine how epic it will be. We learned this week that David Tennant and Catherine Tate would be returning for the show’s 60th anniversary special, so the guy clearly knows how to stage a big event.
I’m not sure if we’re about to witness a Doctor Who Multiverse of Madness situation, but I’m here for it!
Doctor Who showrunner is eager to reveal details about the future of the show
Gatwa is set to take over for Whittaker later this year when her third and final special airs. “I can’t wait to talk to you about but it’s just not fair,” Davies said. “Jodie there. She owns it, she’s got a big finale in October and if we start nipping – we had to announce today because people would have found out about Ncuti whether we liked it or not, that’s the curse of Doctor Who. You have to announce things in advance, but now we’re going to shut up. 2023, you’ll be sick of me. Talk to me in 23, that’s going to be my catchphrase. F**king hell, that’s dreadful.”
Okay, so he’s not ready to spill any details and I respect it. He’s honoring Whittaker until she takes her final bow/regeneration and then will open up about all the deets we’re dying to know.
It’s definitely going to be a thrilling era of Doctor Who. During Davies’ original run he oversaw some of the most iconic episodes in the show’s history, such as “Silence in the Library”, “The Girl in the Fireplace” and “Blink”.
All of this bodes well for the series, and I cannot wait. 2023 can not get here soon enough!
