Say it ain’t so! Riverdale is ending! The CW is breaking hearts left and right these past two weeks, and I have to say, this one cuts deep. I was just getting over the fact that DC’s Legends of Tomorrow got the ax and now I have to coddle my broken heart over Riverdale.

According to The A.V. Club, the eccentric fan-favorite series will be ending after its upcoming seventh season. It’s currently airing its sixth, so we get one more season before we say goodbye. At least it will have had a fairly long life.

This cancellation follows a string of cancellations, including LegendsBatwoman, Dynasty, Roswell, and Naomi amongst others. The Flash has managed to stick around for another year, and we’re getting a new DC show in the form of Gotham Knights. There are also Walker and Supernatural spinoff series on the way.

The CW is heading in a new direction

The CW exec Mark Pedowitz spoke to TVLine about all these cancellations. As far as Riverdale goes, Pedowitz said that he’s “a big believer in attempting to give series that have had long runs an appropriate sendoff. We had a long conversation with [executive producer] Roberto [Aguirre-Sacasa] yesterday, who is thrilled by this news, and we will treat the show in the manner it deserves…. We want to make sure it goes out the right way. I think they, too, felt that seven years is the right amount. As a fan myself, I do want to do what is right for the show.”

I guess I can live with that. Instead of just getting canceled without closure, the show will get to end on its own terms. You know what this means, right? Just enough time for all the wild and crazy things we’ve seen over the last few seasons to come to a head!

Then there are all those superhero shows. But if you’re worried that The CW is leaving the tights-and-capes set behind, Pedowitz has some good news for you. “So we’re not as robust as we were in the past, but still very much there,” he told Variety. “We started with one, this was Arrow 10 years ago, we have now moved to create a whole bunch of superheroes. And we’re proud of it and we plan to stay in that business. No matter what the outcome is, with any event of sale or no sale. I think the Warner side realizes the value of having these properties up. DC Comics realizes the value of what it does to their marketability, in terms of what these franchises are.”

"[We’re] staying in the superhero business. We are staying working with Greg Berlanti, who has masterminded creatively The CW DC Universe."

Superhero-wise, The CW still has The FlashSuperman & Lois, Stargirl and now Gotham Knights. Time will tell how The CW’s new schedule will come together, but for now, we have an eclectic variety of shows to watch on the network. They may not fit together, but I’m sure we can trust The CW knows what it’s doing…I hope.
