Yasmin Finney “in awe” over joining Doctor Who as Rose
By Ariba Bhuvad
Doctor Who fans have been taking a lot of exciting updates about the series over the last couple of months. We finally know who is taking over for Jodie Whittaker (Hi, Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa), we’ve found out that David Tennant and Catherine Tate will return for the show’s 60th anniversary special, and now, Yasmin Finney has joined the cast as Rose.
Rose, of course, the new of the popular companion played by Billie Piper. It’s unclear how Finney’s character fits in, but whatever happens, I’m here for it, particularly with former showrunner Russell T Davies back at the helm.
Heartstopper star Yasmin Finney joins the cast of Doctor Who
Speaking with The Guardian, Finney dished about joining the cast. If you’re wondering why she looks so familiar, it’s probably because you watched her debut on Netflix’s popular rom-com Heartstopper. The show has developed quite the fan following, and I won’t be surprised if that follows Finney over to Doctor Who.
As I already mentioned, Finney is playing the role of Rose, and was seen filming with Tennant and Tate recently. The previous Rose was a companion to Tennant’s Tenth Doctor; is there some kind of Multiverse of Madness situation going on here?
Asked about Tennant and Tate, Finney said she is finding it “a bit surreal to be acting with them. It’s insane and I’m learning so much.” She’s super pumped to be a part of a Doctor Who era with the first-ever Black Doctor, not to mention working with Davies. “I am in awe of the fact that I’ve been seen by such a legend. I was worried about having two huge fanbases following me and whether they’d get along. But I think it’s going pretty well so far!”
Being in the spotlight is nothing new for Finney. Before she broke into acting, she was a TikTok star who documenting her experience as a trans woman. It wasn’t the easiest of experiences in the beginning, as she was bullied at school and ridiculed online.
Things have changed drastically since then, and Finney is beyond grateful for where her journey has taken her. Honestly, I’m inspired by her story and counting down the days until we get to see her shine onscreen in Doctor Who. I have a feeling she’s going to be a fan favorite.
