J.J. Abrams is a busy guy. From the Stephen King drama Overlook to a new Star Trek movie and beyond, he’s one of the biggest producers in Hollywood, and Warner Bros. Discovery suspects he may have overextended himself.

In 2019, Warner Bros. Discovery signed a $250 million deal with Abrams’ production company Bad Robot. One of the shows that was supposed to come out of this deal was a series called Demimonde, which is due to air on HBO Max. The show is about…well, that’s the issue; beyond Danielle Deadwyler being cast as the lead actor, we don’t know anything about this series, and apparently the newly formed Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t happy about that.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. TV has reviewed some scripts for the show but is frustrated with the lack of progress. The show was ordered straight-to-series, meaning Abrams didn’t need to bother making a pilot, but now it’s on the bubble; a decision on whether to continue with it is expected in the next week.

HBO is spending more on Demimonde than on House of the Dragon

Warner Bros. Discovery was set to spend $200 million on Demimonde, which is more than the company is spending on the Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, so I can see why the company would be frustrated with a lack of movement.

Other sources say there’s also been frustration over Abrams laying claim to certain DC characters but not doing anything with them, including a “dark reboot” of Constantine.

“Demimonde” is an 18th century French word describing people on the fringes of society. That’s worth a $200 million commitment, right?
