The Star Wars Celebration event is going on right now, and Disney wants you to know that it is fully committed to pumping your brain so full of Jawas, Rebels, lightsabers, Wookies, Yodas, blasters and X-wings that you’re not going to have room for anything else. To wit: they’ve released a trailer for their newest outing Andor, a prequel series to the movie Rogue One. It will follow title character Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) as he helps out in the early days of the Rebellion against the Empire.
Here’s the trailer. Put it in your eyeballs:
According to The A.V. Club, Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy said that they have already shot 12 episodes of Andor — those will start rolling out on August 31 — and have another 12 on the way. That means this show already has a two-season order, which…baffles me. Does Cassian Andor have some kind of cult following that I don’t know about? Disney is committing this hard to making two seasons of a show about a secondary character from a one-off movie who…well, we can’t spoil the end of Rogue One, now can we?
“I love what he represents for me in the world of Star Wars,” Luna said about his apparently iconic character. “It’s about the power we have and the awakening we deserve. I’m so excited to know that I’ll be shoot more.” Sure, fine, cool.
Jude Law and a bunch of kids will star in Star Wars: Skeleton Crew
And that’s far from the only Star Wars announcement Disney is rolling out. Per IGN, they also announced Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, a new show being developed by Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts about a group of 10-year-old kids from a small planet who try to make their way home after somehow getting lost in that galaxy far, far away. It’s described as a “galactic version of classic Amblin coming-of-age adventure films of the ’80s.” So it’s Stranger Things with Star Wars branding.
Also, while they didn’t announce who was playing any of the kids, they did say that Jude Law is in the show. Unless…wait, is Jude Law playing one of the 10-year-olds? Is Jude Law playing all of the 10-year-olds? That would get my attention.
In any case, Skeleton Crew will take place at roughly the same point in time as The Mandalorian and the upcoming show Ahsoka. I smell never-ending crossovers coming.
The Mandalorian will take us to the planet Mandalore in season 3
Speaking of The Mandalorian and Ahsoka, Disney revealed that the third season of the former and the first of the latter will be along sometime in 2023. There was also a teaser for the third season of The Mandalorian, but it isn’t released as of this writing. The big news is that Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) will be heading to the planet of Mandalore, as was indicated in the season finale of season 2. Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), who was not happy about Din stumbling into the rulership of the planet last season, looks set to contest him.
And if somehow all of this isn’t enough Star Wars for you, the Obi-Wan Kenobi series premieres tomorrow on Disney+. Open wide.
