Stranger Things has always been a show that’s made the most of its ’80s-influenced soundtrack, and season 4 is no exception. In addition to the show’s trademark synthesizer score from composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, Stranger Things utilizes plenty of famous songs to underline the ’80s atmosphere.

One of the best song placements occurs in Episode 4, “Dear Billy,” when Max (Sadie Sink) is being hunted by the show’s new villain Vecna. Through their trip to Pennhurst Asylum, Nancy (Natalia Dyer) and Robin (Maya Hawke) discover that music might be the key to breaking Vecna’s hold on a person’s mind, since it can stimulate deep parts of the subconscious. Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Maten Gatarazzo) and Steve (Joe Kerry) rush to put Max’s favorite song in her walkman, which serves as a lifeline for her to escape this season’s boogeyman.

This is an instance where Stranger Things’ song choice totally elevated the scene, as Max races out of a crumbling illusion of the Upside Down to a driving synthesizer and ethereal singing. If you’ve been wondering what that song is, you’re in the right place.

Kate Bush Stranger Things soundtrack

The song that comes on Max’s headphones is “Running Up That Hill” by Kate Bush, the lead single off the English pop artist’s 1985 album Hounds of Love. Stranger Things season 4 takes place during the spring of 1986; Bush’s classic album had been out for less than a year at that point, making it a new hit at the time. Thankfully, Max’s awesome taste in music was enough to keep her out of Vecna’s clutches.

Max and Lucas discuss Bush during the following episode while they explore the Creel House, where Lucas reveals she’s now one of his favorite artists since her music saved Max’s life. Stranger Things, being all cute and stuff.

Stranger Things 4 Volume I released on May 27 and consists of seven episodes. Volume II lands on Netflix on July I, and will contain the season’s final two episodes.
