His Dark Materials season 3 is “the most ambitious” yet
By Dan Selcke
The third and final season of His Dark Materials is on the way, and according to star Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Coulter), it’s “the most ambitious…of the three.”
It would pretty much have to be. The third book in Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy, The Amber Spyglass, is the thickest and most eventful, so naturally the third season of the show will have to rise to the occasion. And considering that the series is already about a couple of teens who hop dimensions and deal with talking polar bears and literal angels, it’s already way out there.
“You have Mulefas and you’ve got so many different worlds to explore, and you’ve got to complete all these storylines,” Wilson continued. “So you’ve got to kind of complete the stories for Lyra, for Mrs Coulter, for Asriel. It’s a huge undertaking and you’re in the midst of doing that.”
"It’s huge themes and big ideas, so I think a lot of that comes in the third season. That’s quite ambitious for all of us to deal with and to sort of put out there."
Kit Connor hopes Heartstopper fans tune in to watch His Dark Materials
Per Radio Times, Wilson made her comments at the BFI & Radio Times Television Festival. Also on the panel was Kit Connor, who voices Lyra Belacqua’s shape-shifting familiar Pantalaimon, or Pan. “I have definitely started [season 3],” Connor said. “I’m not quite finished. But we’ve done a good chunk of it and it looks amazing.
That said, Connor has shot to fame as one of the two leads in Heartstopper, Netflix’s new YA romance show. If that funnels some new people to His Dark Materials, all the better. “I think [Heartstopper fans] should absolutely tune into His Dark Materials, yeah,” Connor said. “I think that they should not even [to hear me], but just because it’s a great show.”
His Dark Materials is expected to air on HBO and HBO Max later this year, but we don’t have a firm release date yet.
