These days, it seems like having just one successful sci-fi/fantasy show isn’t enough. Instead, genre shows need to branch out with a number of spinoffs and build their own interconnected universe. Amazon is no different with its hit superhero show The Boys.

The Boys, a satire of Marvel fare that features a rogues gallery of secretly villainous superheroes, has already seen one spinoff hit screens: Diabolical, an animated anthology series. Beyond that, a live-action spinoff began production in May. It follows a group of students enrolled in a college for supes run by the insidious mega-corporation Vought. The students are in competition with each other to land endorsement deals and other prizes handed out to superheroes in this world. It won’t be a friendly competition, that’s for sure.

Should the spinoff be a success, The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke promises that many more projects will follow. “We have a couple more scripts [for shows] that we’re in various stages of talking about,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

That said, Amazon is exercising a bit more caution than, say, Marvel which has a new show or movie out pretty much every month. “I don’t think we’re going to rush it,” Kripke said. “I think we want to build it slowly.”

The Boys creators are “trying really hard to not be…sellouts”

The last thing Kripke wants is to milk the franchise for all its worth. “We’re trying really hard to not be scum f— sellouts,” he said. Instead, the team will take each show as it comes, making them as unique as possible. Hopefully, that will help prevent fatigue. “If the college show works, then maybe there’s appetite for more [spin-offs]. But I think we’re in no rush because this only works if each show is totally different than the other, and we maintain the same level of quality as The Boys. Otherwise, it’s sort of like, what’s the point of doing it?”

"We’re trying really hard to make sure that each show or each idea would be something we just want to do on our own anyway, whether The Boys was connected to it or not."

Here’s hoping his patience pays off.

One thing we don’t have to be patient for isThe Boys season 3, which premieres this Friday, June 3. Expect plenty of raunch, blood and superheroes behaving badly.
