Obi-Wan Kenobi: Who’s in the Jedi Tomb?
By WiC Staff
The latest episode of Star Wars: Obi-Wan Kenobi saw our titular Jedi Master infiltrate the Fortress Inquisitorius in order to rescue young Princess Leia (Vivien Lyra Blair) from the clutches of Reva (Moses Ingram). While Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) has wrestled with his guilt over the downfall of the Jedi order and loss of his brother-in-arms Anakin (Hayden Christensen) all season, nowhere was the knife twisted worse than when he came across a tomb deep in the bowels of the fortress that contained the petrified remains of Force-sensitive people the Inquisitors had captured.
The mystery surrounding the fate of the Jedi and Force-sensitive children captured by the Empire was something that Tala (Indira Varma) brought up in Episode 3, and the following episode answered that question in a particularly brutal way. The reason these Jedi are preserved in this amber substance beneath the fortress isn’t made clear; they could be trophies, or bait, or anything in between. But what we do know is that many Force-wielders met their end in this chamber, including at least one familiar character from The Clone Wars animated series who it hurts our hearts to imagine suffering such a tragic fate.
Let’s break down who’s in the tomb.
Jedi Tomb Obi-Wan Kenobi
While most of the Jedi in the tomb are unknown characters, one in particular has caught the internet’s eye. The first and most prominent face we see is a lanky Cosian, who has white braids dangling on either side of their face. This is strongly believed to be Tera Sinube, a Jedi who featured in several episodes of The Clone Wars animated series, most notably a season 2 episode called “Lightsaber Lost” where the kindly old Jedi helped Ahsoka Tano reclaim her lightsaber after it was stolen by a criminal on Coruscant.
Sinube was a minor character who was nonetheless easy to love on The Clone Wars due to his wise and patient demeanor. We never saw Sinube’s fate in the animated series, but that appears to be a standing mystery that Obi-Wan Kenobi has laid to rest. It’s a dark end to a kind character that drives home how terrifying the Empire can be.
Beyond Sinube, there are a few other notable appearances in the Jedi Tomb. The most heartbreaking is a youngling wearing the classic helmet we saw the children use during Revenge of the Sith. Murdering the younglings was Anakin’s first real atrocity as Darth Vader; putting the body of one of these children on display like this is a horrifying testament to how far gone Anakin truly was following the events of that movie.
There are two youngling actors credited with appearing in the fourth episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi: Jonathan and Oliver Ho. These two young actors are twins who also doubled to play one of the younglings in the premiere episode of the limited series…the very same youngling we see encased in amber resin in the Jedi Tomb.
This has been confirmed in an Instagram post from their official “Twinjas” account, which is run by their father Steven Ho, who coincidentally did stuntwork as Donatello in the 1990 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. The post states that, “It was so cool to meet and hang out a little with Ewan and Hayden and have scenes with them. Got to do some wire work for the tomb scene in EP4.” This is doubly intriguing because while Ewan McGregor was in the tomb scene, Hayden Christensen was not. We’ve been figuring we’d see more of the opening Order 66 youngling sequence at some point, possibly even as a way to reveal Reva’s origins. This seems to point toward confirming that theory.
Among the other unidentifiable Jedi in the tomb are a Kiffar. This is the same race as Quinlan Vos, another Clone Wars Jedi who was mentioned in the previous episode when Obi-Wan and Leia were in the Path safehouse on Mapuzo. Despite some fans theorizing that this was Quinlan himself, that’s extremely unlikely considering how much Obi-Wan reacted to seeing his old friend’s name scribbled on the wall in the prior episode. It’s a certainty that if this was Quinlan, the show would have taken a little more time to show Obi-Wan’s reaction since they’d already set up that relationship.
With only two more episodes left, it’s likely we’ll see more connections drawn to this terrifying tomb. After all, we still don’t know how Reva came to be an Inquisitor. The final two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere on June 15 and June 22.
