Amazon is very pleased with The Boys. The third season started the other week, and according to the company the audience has grown 17% over the second. And it’s grown 234% over season 1. Clearly there’s an appetite for an anti-superhero superhero show where most of the heroes are either cowards or monsters.
And considering how bloody entertaining the show is, that’s no wonder. Naturally, The A.V. Club reports that the show has already been renewed for a fourth season. “Speaking for the cast and crew, we’re so grateful to Sony, Amazon, and most of all the fans for embracing the show and allowing us to make more,” showrunner Eric Kripke said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to continue Butcher and the Boys’ fight against Homelander and the Seven, as well as comment on the insane world we’re living in. Also, this is the first time in history that exploding genitalia has led to further success.”
If you’re wondering what he’s referring to, it goes down in the season 3 premiere. If you haven’t watched it yet, proceed with caution, because afterwards you’ll never be able to forget it.
The Boys season 4 is coming
Amazon Studios executive Vernon Sanders gave his own statement. “From our first conversation with Eric Kripke and the creative team about season three of The Boys, we knew the show was continuing to get even bolder—an impressive feat considering the wild success of the Emmy-nominated second season,” he said.
"The Boys continues to push boundaries in storytelling while also being relentlessly entertaining and threading the needle on social satire that feels all too real. This stylized world of the series has incredible global reach and the viewership for opening weekend is proof of that. We are immensely proud of the cast and crew that has spawned a franchise for Prime Video, and we look forward to bringing more of The Boys to our customers."
He’s not kidding. Amazon already has an animated The Boys anthology series on the books and is prepping a spinoff set at a college for budding superheroes.
I do hope the show doesn’t overexpose itself, because right now The Boys is riding high on a lot of narrative momentum mainly generated by the loathsome Homelander (Anthony Starr). Sooner or later, that guy’s gotta go…and I hope they don’t prolong that inevitability overmuch.
For now, I’m happy, because The Boys is a smashing show and I’d love to see more, particularly if the remainder of season 3 is as good as what’s come so far. New episodes drop on Fridays.
