Amazon is getting ready to premiere its wildly expensive new Lord of the Rings series: The Rings of Power, out September 2. But Middle-earth fever has broken out all over the entertainment industry. There’s a new video game called The Lord of the Rings: Return To Moria on the way, and New Line Cinema — the studio behind Peter Jackson’s original movie trilogy — is making a new movie called The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

Per DeadlineThe War of the Rohirrim will be an animated movie directed by Kenji Kamiyama and produced by Philippa Boyens, who helped Jackson write the original trilogy. Set some 183 years before the story we all know, it’s about Helm Hammerhand, a king of Rohan dealing with a sudden attack by a Dunlending lord named Wulf. Helm is forced to lead his people to the stronghold of the Hornburg, a fortress that will come to be known as Helm’s Deep. Helm’s daughter Hera will also play a large role as they resist Wulf’s onslaught.

Playing Helm is none other than Brian Cox, who has had a very long career but who is most recently known for playing the intractable, merciless Logan Roy on HBO’s Succession. Gaia Wise will play Hera and Luke Pasqualino will play Wulf.

Miranda Otto returns as Éowyn in new Lord of the Rings movie

Perhaps most exciting to fans of the old Lord of the Rings movies, Miranda Otto will return as Éowyn, a huge fan favorite from Jackson’s trilogy. Obviously Éowyn isn’t born yet during the time of this story, but she will narrate the tale.

The voice cast also includes Lorraine Ashbourne, Yazdan Qafouri, Benjamin Wainwright, Laurence Ubong Williams, Shaun Dooley, Michael Wildman, Jude Akuwudike, Bilal Hasna and Janine Duvitski (ITV’s Benidorm). The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim is due out on April 12, 2024.
