While we’re getting lots of new and ambitious Disney movies, so too are we seeing the company look back and remake some of their classic animated films. Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, Mulan, Dumbo…their growing catalog of live-action remakes goes on. Next up to receive the modern makeover treatment is Hercules. Guy Ritchie, who helmed the 2019 remake of Aladdin, will direct, per Deadline.

Remaking their beloved properties is always going to be lucrative for Disney; a huge audience is already there. When you take a look at the money some of these movies have made, it’s easy to see why Disney continues to churn out these remakes. The Lion King remake bagged $1.663 billion at the box office. Aladdin also crossed the billion-dollar mark at $1.051 billion.

Hercules was the 35th animated film produced by Disney. The movie begins as Hercules (Tate Donovan) is taken as a baby by Hades (James Woods) and made to live as half-man, half-god. As a teenager, Hercules works to prove himself worthy of living on Mount Olympus.

The remake will be produced by AGBO, the company run by acclaimed Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo.  The studio is still hiring writers.

Who will play the lead role in Disney’s live-action Hercules remake?

Currently, no casting announcements have been made. One can hope that Danny DeVito will voice Phil, as he did in the original movie. We also saw it when James Earl Jones returned to voice Mufasa in The Lion King remake, so that kind of thing has happened before.

So who should play the title character? Chris Hemsworth seems the obvious choice, if Disney wants to surprise absolutely no one. I’m pretty sure Dwayne Johnson will receive a call, too. That said, they’ll need someone a little younger, so Tom Holland may need to clear his diary.

Hercules isn’t the only Disney remake in the pipeline. A live-action version of The Little Mermaid is slated to premiere next year. Surely, at some point, The Black Cauldron will make a comeback.

Since the Hercules project has just been announced, there is no release date yet. Watch this space.

Next. Netflix is losing subscribers and firing workers, but it’s far from doomed. dark
