The ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe is the biggest movie franchise of all time. Marvel movies have dominated the box office for over a decade at this point, and they’re showing no signs of slowing down. Despite all of its success, Christian Bale had no idea was the MCU was before getting cast as the villain in the next Thor movie.

Bale is no stranger to superhero properties. He famously played Batman in Christopher Nolan’s iconic Dark Knight trilogy. Now he’s quite literally lived long enough to see himself become the villain, playing Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder.

He’s officially joined the MCU… not that he knows what that actually means. “People would go, ‘Oh, look at this! He’s entered the MCU!’ And I’d go, ‘I’ve done what? I haven’t entered s—, thank you very much,'” Bale told Total Film. “I’m like, ‘The MCU?’ I had to ask what that was.”

A rookie mistake. You’ve got a lot of movies and TV shows to catch up on, Christian.

Christian Bale Googled Gorr, and didn’t like what he saw.

Once Bale got the part, naturally he went to Google to search for his character. “I did make the mistake of googling him and, oh no! [In the comics] he runs around in a G-string all the time,” Bale remembered. “And I thought, ‘They don’t have the right man for that!'”

Thankfully for Bale, the decision was made to scrap the comics outfit. “But I always did think what he could do with this in front of a blue screen. He could chuck on whatever he wants later on.”

As he did with Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi aims to take the MCU to new levels of wackiness in Love and Thunder. A cosmic romantic comedy with Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) and the Guardians of the Galaxy? Yes, please.

Thor: Love and Thunder releases in theaters on July 8.

Next. Thor: Love and Thunder may be Chris Hemsworth’s “last” Marvel movie. dark
