Cryptocurrency — e.g. Bitcoin, Ethereum and more — has been on a lot of peoples’ minds these past few years, as more folk look for ways to get rich in a society where the divide between the haves and the have-nots grows increasingly wide. Cryptocurrency hasn’t proved a good solution to that, though. Basically, it’s digital money untethered to any regulatory authority, which might sound good until you realize that regulatory authorities keep normal currency from swinging wildly one way or the other in value, which is what’s been happening to cryptocurrency over the past few months.
Basically, the value of cryptocurrency is in free-fall, and a lot of people who invested in this stuff are getting hot under the collar. But there’s no bad situation that the internet can’t better with some well-timed memes.
As it happens, crypto folk have turned to Game of Thrones to describe this current crash, which many have dubbed the “crypto winter.” And you know what the Starks say about winter…

This Crypto winter is going to be like the Game of Thrones winter (which is around 3 years). More importantly, tribes will fall, factions will restructure, and there will be a lot of bloodshed. pic.twitter.com/nqUBIorkhl
But this one’s not so sure:
Think of "crypto winter" in terms of a Game of Thrones capital-W Winter. https://t.co/jEs6I9U1Yt

And there’s lots more where that came from; you can check out a sampling on Wiki of Thrones.
It’s hard to know whether the crypto market will ever have a change in fortune. As for Game of Thrones, there’s a Targaryen-themed prequel series called House of the Dragon coming in August. I look forward to seeing how the internet memes “fire and blood.”
