Universal has released a bunch of kaiju movies over the past several years, starting with Godzilla in 2014 and most recently Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021. But why stop at movies when you can have a TV show? Apple TV+ will run a Godzilla series sometime in the future, and we’re starting to get details.

Specifically, we know some of the cast members. From Variety:

  • Anna Sawai (Pachinko) is Cate, a former teacher who “uncovers a family secret” in Japan. She’s “a G-Day survivor,” which is the term apparently being used to designate people who survived a Godzilla attack from whichever movie that was.
  • Ren Watabe (461 Days Of Bento) is Kentaro, “an intelligent, creative, and curious young man who has yet to find his own path.”
  • Kiersey Clemons (The Flash) is May, “an American ex-pat with a roguish exterior that she uses to protect herself as well as others”
  • Joe Tippett (Mare Of Easttown) is Tim, “an office drone who dreams of secret agent adventure”
  • Elisa Lasowski (Versailles) is Duvall, “an expert operative with unwavering confidence in herself and her skills.”

Godzilla himself will presumably be played by an extra in a lizard costume; camera tricks will be employed to make him look big…or maybe they’ll sell out and use CGI, I dunno.

The Monsterverse is expanding to TV with a Godzilla show

As for the show itself, it will be about “one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.” Matt Shakman, who directed WandaVision and the rip-roaring Game of Thrones episode “The Spoils of War,” will direct the first two episodes of the series.

It sounds interesting enough, but is there room in our lives for a new cinematic universe? Ponder that as we wait on a release date.
