Warning: This post contains SPOILERS for the newest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, “All Those Who Wander”
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been a hit with fans and critics alike, with its first season scoring 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. Mixing a healthy dose of nostalgia with updated sensibilities for the modern era, the show is what every Star Trek fan has been asking for since the end of Voyager.
And the good news is, it won’t be ending anytime soon. Paramount+ was so confident that the show would be a success that it commissioned season 2 before the first episode even aired.
The final episode of the first season, “A Quality of Mercy,” airs on Paramount+ next week and promises to bring the fan service. Fans of The Original Series will be delighted.
Meanwhile, the newest episode is just as huge, with shocking moments throughout that mark it as one of the series’ best. The two together are a stunning end to what could have been a rocky season.
What we can expect next season on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds
The death of Hemmer in “All Those Who Wander” was the most shocking moment of Strange New Worlds so far, and leaves a huge vacancy in engineering. While it’s a shame that this interesting character didn’t stay on the show, it does open up the possibility of a particular Scottish engineer to make his debut. We may even get a hint next week!
Another character who’s departing is La’an. As one of the best characters from season 1, this would be a significant loss to the show, although it could be part of a larger storyline.
Finally, with the Gorn being this season’s “big bad” and the season reintroducing the Romulans, we can expect the antagonists to keep coming. We’ve yet to face an adult Gorn, and the Klingons have been conspicuous by their absence. Babs Olusanmokun (M’Benga) has confirmed that Star Trek‘s most famous villains will return, saying that season 2 will show a darker side to his character as he confronts his feelings about the Klingons.
In news that will alarm fans, however, costume designer Bernadette Croft has teased “a cool redesign for one alien species,” with Inverse speculating that she may be talking about Klingons. Hopefully she was talking about the Gorn, as few fans will want another Star Trek: Discovery situation!
Storylines we can expect to continue are Number One being augmented and how others will react, Uhura finding her footing in Starfleet, and Spock’s relationship issues. Also, executive producer Henry Alonso Myers pretty much confirmed that Angel would be returning. “That was the idea; create a charismatic villain who steals the show and whom we want to see again and again,” he told Inverse. “We would love to see more of Angel, absolutely.”
