12 questions Stranger Things season 5 needs to answer
By Daniel Roman
7. How will the Nancy-Steve-Jonathan love triangle resolve?
Since we’re talking about romances, there’s another big one that must be addressed in Stranger Things 5. As of this writing, Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers are still a couple…but should they be?
Fans are divided, warring across the Internet on this Very Important Topic. Nancy and Jonathan found themselves separated for pretty much the entirety of season 4, with Jonathan going on a cross-country road trip with Will, Mike, and his new stoner friend Argyle to rescue Eleven, while Nancy teamed up with Steve Harrington and the rest of the Hawkins crew to go after Vecna.
And when I say Nancy teamed up with Steve, I mean they teamed up with full-on romantic tension. Steve and Nancy were an item during Stranger Things season 1, back when Steve was still a jerk. They eventually broke up, then got back together, then broke up again. This season Steve confessed that he’s still in love with Nancy, and going on an Upside Down adventure gave them each a chance to show the other how much they’d grown. Nancy even defended Steve when Jonathan made a joke at his expense in the finale…and then in the same breath, Jonathan lied to Nancy about his own college admission.
Anyway, you can probably guess who I support in this ship. But whatever team you’re on, this love triangle is going to need some kind of resolution in season 5.
8. Will Eddie’s name ever be cleared?
Season 4 introduced us to new character Eddie Munson, the leader of the Hawkins D&D club and a metalhead to his core. Vecna’s first victim, Chrissy, died in Eddie’s trailer, and since then he was suspect number one for the villain’s killing spree. Despite most everyone in Hawkins believing Eddie was responsible for the deaths, he was a stalwart character who went down in a last blaze of glory to buy more time for the Hawkins crew to take out Vecna. His scene shredding Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” on his guitar in the Upside Down is sure to become one of the most iconic from the show.
Yet for all his heroics, when the earthquake rocks Hawkins at the end of the season, the blame is still pinned on Eddie. Only the Hawkins gang knows that he gave his life to fight Vecna; everyone else still thinks he’s a cult leader who may be responsible for opening a gate to hell.
We got some wonderful closure in the Stranger Things 4 finale when Dustin told Eddie’s uncle that he died a hero, but will the world at large ever come to know that Eddie wasn’t responsible for the death and destruction that rocked the town? Now that the Upside Down is invading the real world, there’s no reason to keep the circumstances of Eddie’s death a secret. Whether anyone would believe the truth or not, Eddie deserves to have his name cleared before all is said and done.
