Deleted Wheel of Time scene reveals best Egwene shot of season 1
By Daniel Roman
The Wheel turns, and seasons of television come and pass. Episodes fade to the backlist, and even the backlist is long forgotten when the next season arrives. But sometimes a deleted scene surfaces, reminding us of the roads not traveled.
Season 1 of The Wheel of Time on Prime Video was one of the streaming platform’s biggest new shows of 2021. Adapting the iconic 14-book series by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, it was Amazon’s first big fantasy swing. The results were pretty mixed; there were things The Wheel of Time did quite well, and other places where it dropped the ball pretty hard. Fortunately, it did well enough that it’ll be getting a second season, so we’ll get a chance to see how the show grows as it goes on.
I doubt I’m alone in remembering the excitement I felt when the show’s first trailer was released. There was a lot of excitement going into The Wheel of Time, and a lot of that first footage, from the practical effects used for the Trollocs to the sweeping vistas of the Two Rivers, was pretty gorgeous.
There was one very cool shot from that trailer that never appeared in the actual show: Egwene al’Vere (Madeleine Madden) surfacing in a pool of water, covered in dyes that matched the seven colors of the Aes Sedai Ajahs. That was too bad, because the image was very striking and included some really excellent long-game foreshadowing.
Now, The Wheel of Time’s official Twitter account has just released that deleted scene. Check it out:
Deleted Wheel of Time scene shows Egwene’s induction into the Women’s Circle
In a nice bit of shared symbolism, the scene where Egwene is covered with the various colored dyes has nothing to do with the Aes Sedai Ajahs at all, but rather her induction into the Women’s Circle of Emond’s Field. As Egwene wades out into the sacred pool in the cavern outside the town, Nynaeve recites some lines about the power and strength necessary to be a woman in the world of The Wheel of Time. As she does, other members of the Women’s Circle pour the various dyes into the pool. Egwene goes under water, and emerges painted in the dyes, proud and regal.
It’s a cool scene, and nice to finally see it after the show used it in the marketing so much. Sometimes things end up on the cutting room floor and often it’s for the best, but this scene in particular is one a lot of fans were curious about.
As for season 2 of The Wheel of Time, Amazon recently wrapped filming. It will be arriving on Prime Video sometime after Amazon’s other big fantasy juggernaut The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power airs this fall.
