The Mandalorian season 3 will tell “many different kinds of stories”

Carl Weathers made his Star Wars debut in the first season of The Mandalorian, playing Greef Karga, an agent of a bounty hunting build. He’s cleaned the place up a bit since then, turning it into a respectable business. He’ll be back for The Mandalorian season 3, and Carl Weathers will once again be stepping behind the camera to direct.

Weathers directed the season 2 episode “The Siege,” which was pretty heavy on action. That trend will continue in season 3. “Oh there was a bit more , I think, in this one,” he told Empire.

That said, the action will be “a little different, because a lot of it had a lot more scope. But this one also had many, many different kinds of stories within the story, and that’s really nice.”

"I love directing. It’s my passion. This show gives you so much opportunity to deal with all these different characters. Even though they’re different episodes, it’s not like typical episodic television – it’s not a whodunnit, it’s not a dark comedy, it’s not a procedural. It’s so many different things, and it’s action-adventure on top of that. As a director, you get a chance to exercise your talent, and also your ability to deliver in those different areas."

The Mandalorian has been expanding the scope of its story over time. At the start, it was just Mando and Baby Yoda going on adventures. Now Mando accidentally became the leader of a whole planet, there are other characters who think they should have the honor instead, and Baby Yoda has gotten a bit of Jedi training from Luke Skywalker. It’s only natural that the episodes would involve “many different kinds of stories.”

Greef Karga’s fancy new outfit

Before the interview ended, Weathers sounded off on the most important thing coming up in The Mandalorian season 3: the fashion. Attendees at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in May saw a glimpse of new footage from season 3, including Greef Karga in a snazzy-looking red robe.

“Amazing, isn’t it?” Weathers beamed. “We have such a wonderful wardrobe designer who puts all of that together. The wardrobe is majestic to say the least. Greef wears it well!” Apparently it’s “damn heavy,” though.

The robe also symbolizes how much Greef has evolved since season 1. “It really speaks to how he has matriculated, how he has grown in stature and ambition,” Weathers said. “And obviously on screen it looks fantastic. It adds so much.”

There’s no release date for The Mandalorian season 3 yet, but it sounds like things are coming together nicely.
