Doctor Who has been taking up a lot of space these last few months. Between Jodie Whittaker’s final episode on the horizon, Ncuti Gatwa’s casting as the Fourteenth Doctor, David Tennant and Catherine Tate filming the 60th-anniversary special, and Russell T. Davies returning as showrunner after years ago, there has been a lot going on. It’s an exciting time to be a Whovian, that’s for sure!

And the hits keep on coming. There’s been speculation surrounding the return of other past characters, particularly with the anniversary special coming out next year. Those are always great excuses to get the gang back together. It feels like the possibilities are endless.

On that note, at the 2022 London Film and Comic-Con, Alex Kingston (River Song) was asked whether she’d return to the series. “Who knows?” she asked. “Bring it on, Ncuti is all I’m saying!”

Will Alex Kingston return as River Song in Doctor Who?

Kingston expressed similar feelings while appearing on The One Show. “Of course, I would want to come back,” she said. “I feel like River – she started at the end, as it were, so there’s only one way to go, which is forward and to continue living.”

For those who don’t know who River Song is, let me give you some quick background. River was revealed to be the wife of the Doctor (specifically the eleventh and twelfth ones) as well as well as the child of Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) and Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill). These two were the companions to the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith). I highly recommend going back to watch those episodes because the River Song/Rory/Amy saga is one of my favorite arcs in Doctor Who.

While it’s unclear how River could be written back into the story, I’d love to see Alex Kingston return in some capacity. I feel like there is always room for her, and if anyone can figure out how to make it happen, it’s Russell T. Davies!
