Check out the official synopsis for Dune: Part Two. Paul Atreides will not take the slaughter of his family by Baron Harkonnen lying down.
After some pandemic-related delays, Dune came out last year to mostly positive reception. An adaptation of Frank Herbert’s famous sci-fi novel of the same name, the movie told a dense story about interplanetary politics, prescience, and sand worms as big as skyscrapers, but it stopped just as things were getting really interesting. The first Dune movie only tells the first half of the book…but Part Two is coming.
When last we left our hero Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), he had fled into the deserts of Arrakis with his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) after his father and most of his household were murdered by the insidious Baron Vladimir Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgård). Paul and Jessica take up with the primitive (or so it seems) Fremen people of the desert. Since the Harkonnens believe them dead, they have plenty of time to lick their wounds and plan their counterattack.
And based on the new synopsis for the sequel, it sounds like Paul has one hell of a counterattack planned. Read below:
"This follow-up film will explore the mythic journey of Paul Atreides as he unites with Chani and the Fremen while on a warpath of revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe, he endeavors to prevent a terrible future only he can foresee."
It’s been a minute since I last read Dune, but most of that sounds accurate to the book, save the bit about Paul having to choose between the love of his life and the fate of the known universe. In the books, Paul falls for the Fremen warrior Chani, played in the movies by Zendaya. I don’t recall the fate of Paul and Chani’s love being seriously threatened in the first book, but maybe I’m misremembering?
In any case, Dune: Part 2 comes out in theaters on November 17, 2023. We can find out together then.
