When Disney bought 20th Century Fox in 2019, it cleared the way for the X-Men to make their way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel has been inching towards a reveal ever since. It made the biggest stride yet in the season finale of Ms. Marvel, where it was revealed that lead character Kamala Khan was actually…pause for sharp intakes of breath…a mutant!

Does that mean we’ll see Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm and the rest in the MCU in short order? We don’t know, but you have to imagine Marvel is working on something; they’re not one to let popular characters sit on the shelf for too long, not when there’s money to be made.

And now, Deadline — which is pretty much the gold standard when it comes to breaking news about the entertainment industry — reports that Marvel is working on something called The Mutants. We don’t know if it’s a movie or a TV show or what, but we know what that word means; it means a psychic guy in a wheelchair running a school for kids with super-powers who fight against human bigots and mutants who control magnetism. Put it in our veins, Disney.

When will the X-Men become part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Deadline mentioned The Mutants in passing while guessing at some of the new stuff we might see at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, which kicks off today and lasts through the end of the weekend. It also mentioned the Fantastic Four reboot, Mahershala Ali’s Blade movie, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and The Marvels.

However, Deadline also notes that, according to sources, Disney is hoping to save some of its bigger announcements for its own D23 convention in September. We’ll find out when the Marvel Cinematic Universe mega-panel goes down at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
