Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira will star in a Walking Dead limited series
By Dan Selcke
Remember when AMC said it was making a bunch of movies about Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), the lead character from The Walking Dead who exited the show in season 9? Well, that’s over. We learned today at San Diego Comic-Con that AMC has scrapped the project.
BUT, instead of that, we are getting a Rick Grimes miniseries, costarring Danai Gurira as Michonne, who herself left The Walking Dead not long after Rick did to go in search of him; we last saw him getting airlifted away by a helicopter and still don’t know where it took him. Soon we will.
The Walking Dead limited series with Rick and Michonne is coming in 2023
“Rick and Michonne are two of my favorite people, and Danai and Andy are two of my favorite people,” said The Walking Dead boss Scott M. Gimple. “Working with all of them continues to be a dream come true.”
"The three of us, along with a terrific team of [Walking Dead] all-stars and incredible new voices are crafting an insane love epic worth the long, long wait."
It has been a while; Rick hasn’t been on TV since 2018. I think a TV show makes more sense than movies though. That’s how The Walking Dead began, after all; why make the jump to the big screen now? Something kind of similar happened with the Obi-Wan Kenobi miniseries on Disney+. That started life as a series of movies, but when it became clear that streaming TV was where the money was at, Lucasfilm retooled it for Disney+.
We don’t have an exact release date for what I assume will be called The Rick and Michonne Happy Fun Time Hour, but it’ll be along in 2023.
