The Wheel of Time renewed for season 3 at Amazon
By Daniel Roman
Amazon Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time is one of the streaming service’s biggest new fantasy shows. Though its first season was somewhat divisive, The Wheel of Time managed to find quite a lot of fans and get enough excitement internally at Amazon that it was renewed for season 2 before season 1 had even released. Now, Amazon is continuing that trend. According to Variety, it was announced at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con that the studio has renewed The Wheel of Time for season 3; and this before we even have a release date or trailer for season 2!
The Wheel of Time adapts the 14-book strong epic fantasy series by Robert Jordan, which was completed by Brandon Sanderson after Jordan’s passing in 2007. The first season mainly covered the events of the first book, The Eye of the World, which saw the Aes Sedai sorceress Moiraine (Rosamund Pike) whisk five young men and women away from the sleepy town of Emmond’s Field on a world-spanning quest to identify a reincarnated hero known as the Dragon Reborn who could fight the ominous Dark One. Season 1 also pulled in elements from the second book, The Great Hunt, and even a little bit from book 3, The Dragon Reborn. From the sounds of it, season 3 will be getting into book 4, The Shadow Rising.
“I’m so thrilled that we’ll be making a third season of ‘The Wheel of Time,’” said Rafe Judkins, series executive producer and showrunner. “The Shadow Rising has always been my favorite book in the series, so being able to bring it to television and introduce new audiences to the stories that made me fall in love with these books in the first place is such an honor, and something I’ve been working toward since I first pitched the show years and years ago.”
Go behind the scenes of The Wheel of Time season 2
“We are so excited to dive deeper into the world of ‘The Wheel of Time’ with Rafe Judkins and his team, who have done such a marvelous job of honoring Robert Jordan’s vision and delivering an incredible viewing experience to Prime Video customers,” added Vernon Sanders, Amazon Studios’ head of global television. “Season One resonated with the most loyal of Jordan devotees, as well as the uninitiated, who were experiencing this incredible world for the first time, proving this is a show that truly stands out in the genre space. We couldn’t be happier to give fans more reasons to be excited about the show and bring more The Wheel of Time to our customers worldwide.”
Considering how immense the story of The Wheel of Time is, it’s nice to know that Amazon is taking this kind of a long-game approach to the series. The knowledge that a season 3 is guaranteed should allow the creative team greater flexibility when it comes to working on season 2; they can leave story breadcrumbs for future seasons throughout.
As for when we’ll see season 3, don’t start counting the days quite yet. Season 2 currently has no release date, though we did get a sneak peek of it during the con, which you can watch above. It’s expected to drop sometime after Amazon’s other big fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power runs this fall.
New episodes of The Wheel of Time Origins coming in August
The season 3 renewal wasn’t the only Wheel of Time news to drop at Comic-Con. It was also announced that Prime Video will be releasing new episodes of The Wheel of Time Origins, a series of animated shorts that dive deeper into the lore of the series. The announcement came bundled with a brand new trailer for one of the upcoming episodes, which focuses on how the Borderland kingdom of Malkier fell to the Blight and a young al’Lan Mandragoran grew up fighting the forces of darkness. The Wheel of Time star Daniel Henney will voice Lan in this episode. According to CBR.com, it will draw heavily from the prequel novel New Spring, which fleshes out Lan’s backstory.
These new episodes will drop as Prime Video X-Ray content exclusively next month.
