Shang-Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton will helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
By Ariba Bhuvad
It is such an epic time to be a Marvel fan, as was witnessed during the Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend. I was there in person, and I can attest to the next-level energy and hype reverberating through the famous Hall H. We waited all day for Kevin Feige to come out and give us some news, and boy did he deliver. We found out about the end of Phase 4, plans for Phase 5, and even got a sneak peek at what’s ahead in Phase 6. It was just surprise after surprise; honestly, I’m still not over it.
Perhaps one of the most exciting things we learned was the title of the next Avengers movie: Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, which is slated for release in 2025. Since that panel, The Hollywood Reporter has shared that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton will helm the film.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director on board for next Avengers film
After Shang-Chi made about $432 million worldwide, Cretton signed an overall deal with Marvel. I cannot wait to see what he whips up for the sequel! I imagine that won’t be for a while, but still, a second chapter is much-needed!
During the Marvel panel, Feige didn’t reveal who would be a part of the superhero roster for The Kang Dynasty, but given what’s going to come out in the interim, I think we can make some educated guesses. I think we can expect Daredevil, Thunderbolts, and Fantastic Four, among other characters, to get together for a team-up. Perhaps even some mutants? Cretton has an immense task ahead of him. I can’t imagine what it will be like to wrangle together a new version of the Avengers after the previous movies have been such huge hits. There’s a lot to live up to.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is slated to hit theaters on May 2, 2025. It will be followed by another Avengers film later that year: Secret Wars, which is set to release on November 7, 2025.
While we don’t know which Avengers will be there, we do know that Jonathan Majors will play the role of Kang (although which version is unclear). We’ll be meeting one version of him in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, who is different than the version we saw in the Disney+ series Loki. But that’s about all we know for now. Side note: I saw a clip of the new Ant-Man film at SDCC, and it looks epiiiiic!
I can’t wait to see what the Shang-Chi director has in store for us in the next chapter of the MCU. Whatever he does, I hope that Ms. Marvel, aka Kamala Khan, is brought into the inner circle of the next generation of Marvel heroes!
