Stranger Things star detained at airport until immigration officer recognized him
By Dan Selcke
Joseph Quinn is the latest actor to break out from Stranger Things, winning the hearts and minds of viewers thanks to his portrayal of the drug-dealing, D&D-playing, Metallica-shredding super-senior Eddie Munson.
Munson is an Indiana guy, but Quinn himself is British, which might help him go under the radar among fans. That could be useful to him if he doesn’t want to be showered with attention, but it can backfire, too, like when he gets detained by immigration officers in an airport who would wave him through if they knew who he was.
Quinn told the story during a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “I very nearly didn’t make it [to this interview],” Quinn said. “I was taken into, I guess what you could call it more of a dungeon. And I was asked to wait there for about 20 minutes and then I was summoned to this desk where someone asked me, ‘What are you doing in the United States, sir?’ I said, ‘I’m actually here to meet Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. And he didn’t believe me.”
"One of his colleagues looked over at him, looked at me, and said: ‘Leave Eddie alone!’ And then [the colleague] said, ‘It’s Eddie from Stranger Things, and he was like, ‘You’re Eddie Munson?’"
However, Quinn wasn’t home free yet. “[The man asked], ‘Do you come back next season?’ I was like, ‘I don’t know,’ and he said, ‘You better,’ and gave me my passport.” What would the guy have done if Quinn had said he didn’t come back?
If you find yourself detailed at an airport, try being famous
This is a cute story, although there’s a sinister side to it. Like…what happens to you if you don’t get recognized by a random immigration officer as starring on beloved Netflix series? Are they just gonna keep you at LaGuardia and make you miss your meeting/job interview/own wedding, etc?
Clearly, the only solution is for Netflix to cast everyone on Earth in the next season of Stranger Things. Netflix, please get on that.
