You are missing out if you haven’t watched the Harley Quinn animated show. DC’s animated series caught our attention with its super-meta, uncensored comedic approach. It’s the best animated show out there, and it’s finally coming back after two years!

I wasn’t sure that the series would return, but we are finally on the cusp of the season 3 premiere. Showrunners Justin Halpern and Patrick Schumacker, who are also behind the way-less-vulgar ABC sitcom Abbott Elementary, talked all about it to The A.V. Club.

DC’s hilariously vulgar animated series Harley Quinn is back!

The animated series gives us Harley Quinn’s perspective on the craziness of Gotham City. She’s voiced by Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco, who does a fabulous job of bringing the wild villain to life, although it takes a lot of people to make a show this consistently entertaining. “A lot of that goes to the makeup of the staff that we have had over time because it’s a real salad bowl, whatever you want to call it, of like people with varied backgrounds, right?” Shumacker said. “There are comics nerds, but there are also just pure comedy nerds that know nothing about the DC canon. I think that we created alchemy that made that thing work that shouldn’t have.” Halpern added on to that:

"He and I always said that we’re not going to be able to do superhero stuff, like big battles and fights and shit, better than what’s being done. And that’s not even interesting to us. To us, the show lives in what are the mundane moments in between all those things you see in the movies, right? But you’ve got to drive to that battle or you have to get some food afterward."

love the idea of focusing on the moments between the epic confrontations. No one else is doing that and that’s where Harley Quinn shines.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy “will never break up”

I think what I love the most about Harley Quinn is seeing the romantic relationship between her and Poison Ivy. According to the showrunners, this couple isn’t going anywhere! “For me, we still have the occasional fan reaction of ‘I don’t like Harley and Ivy together. She should get back with the Joker,’ which we’re never going to do,” said Shumacker. “Harley and Ivy will never break up in the series as long as we have a say. That’s something that we never want to touch again.”

#Harlivy forever!

The third season of Harley Quinn is set to premiere this week, and the showrunners have promised that we are in for a treat. Sadly, there is no news about a season 4 yet, but I’m sure as soon as the world sees what season 3 has in store for us, renewal is imminent.

Harley Quinn premieres on Thursday, July 28 on HBO Max; you won’t want to miss it!
