Breaking Bad and Jessica Jones veteran Krysten Ritter scores a lead role on Orphan Black: Echoes, AMC’s follow-up to the cult sci-fi hit.

Orphan Black never quite became a mainstream phenomenon, but the Canadian sci-fi show delivered lots of thrills, some interesting ruminations on identity, and a screen-busting lead performance by Tatiana Maslany, who played several different clone versions of the same character. She was so good that it almost seems like a waste to only have her play one character in the upcoming Disney+ show She-Hulk. Would that it were She-Hulks.

But while Maslany’s time on Orphan Black is over, AMC will be heading back to that universe in Orphan Black: Echoes, which is set in the near future, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What’s more, we now know who will play the lead character: Krysten Ritter, who you may recognize from Breaking Bad or as the title character in Netflix’s Jessica Jones.

We don’t know much about the series yet. THR says it will explore “the scientific manipulation of human existence” and that it “revolves around a group of women as they weave their way into each other’s lives and embark on a thrilling journey, unraveling the mystery of their identity and uncovering a wrenching story of love and betrayal.” Ritter will play Lucy, “a woman with an unimaginable origin story who is trying to find her place in the world.” I like it but could you make it more vague?

Is Lucy a clone? I bet Lucy is a clone. But we’ll find out for sure when Orphan Black: Echoes premiers on AMC sometime in 2023. Ten episodes have already been ordered.
