It’s a wonderful time to be a Doctor Who fan! We’ve got Jodie Whittaker’s final episode coming in the fall, which will make way for Ncuti Gatwa to take over. Behind the camera, Chris Chibnall will be replaced by former showrunner Russell T Davies, returning for the first time since the David Tennant era.

Season 14 is rumored to premiere in 2023. It will allegedly kick off with the 60th anniversary special, which will formally introduce Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor. It will feature appearances by Tennant and Catherine Tate, reprising their roles as the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble…along with a few other surprises. For instance, Neil Patrick Harris will be part of the cast.

Speaking to VarietyHarris said that Davies offered him the role of this mysterious Doctor Who villain after Harris starred in his HBO Max limited series It’s a Sin. Harris was particularly excited to meet Gatwa. “I got to meet and interact with him a bit and he’s glorious,” Harris said. “He’ll be the first gay Doctor, which is going to be super cool, a sexier Doctor.”

Yasmin Finney talks joining Doctor Who as Rose Tyler

Speaking of new characters, Yasmin Finney, who is set to play a new character named Rose, recently spoke with Attitude about joining the Doctor Who universe. “It feels crazy to be part of the Who-niverse, to be seen in the industry as a Black, queer person — it overwhelms me with joy,” Finney said. “It tells me the industry is changing, we’re slowly getting there.”

I couldn’t agree more! There have been big changes on that front, and we are here for all the inclusivity and diversity. It’s about darn time, I say.

Not much is known about Finney’s character, but there’s a lot of speculation. Given that her character’s name is Rose Tyler, some theorize that she is a variant of the original Rose Tyler character (played by Billie Piper) from a different universe. Or some think she could be Donna Noble’s teenage daughter. The possibilities are endless, and I’m excited about them!

One thing we do know is that Finney’s character will be trans, which she confirmed while speaking at a London Trans+ Pride event. Other than that, we will need to sit tight until 2023 to learn exactly who Finney’s character is and what it means for the larger Whoni-verse.
