The Flash will end for good after a shorter-than-usual season 9
By Dan Selcke
The Flash remains The CW’s most-watched show, but after nearly a decade on the air, it’s time to call it quits. The upcoming ninth season of The Flash will be its last.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Eric Wallace broke the news in a statement. “Nine seasons!” he said. “Nine years of saving Central City while taking audiences on an emotional journey full of heart, humor and spectacle. And now Barry Allen has reached the starting gate for his last race. So many amazing people have given their talents, time and love to bring this wonderful show to life each week. So, as we get ready to honor the show’s incredible legacy with our exciting final chapter, I want to say thank you to our phenomenal cast, writers, producers and crew over the years who helped make The Flash such an unforgettable experience for audiences around the world.”
The Flash will return for its final season sometime in 2023. It will consist of just 13 episodes, shorter than usual.
The Flash has been working towards an ending for a while now
The Flash is one of the last DC-themed shows still on the network after the rash of cancellations that took out Batgirl and Legends of Tomorrow. That said, there have been rumblings that The Flash was working towards an ending for a while now. In fact, season 8 was supposed to be the end, but The CW managed to sign stars Grant Gustin and Candice Patton to new contracts. Wallace and company reworked the ending of season 8 so it could lead into one last hurrah.
So it doesn’t feel right to lump The Flash in with the other shows The CW has cancelled as it slims down its content offerings in preparation to sell itself to station group Nexstar; the end has been coming for a while now. Nine seasons is long enough for anyone.
Beyond The Flash, other DC shows at The CW include Superman & Lois and newcomer Gotham Knights.
