Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania director teases the “epic” movie
By Ashley Hurst
One of the biggest honors for actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is seeing their characters complete a trilogy of movies. Next year, Paul Rudd will complete his first trilogy as Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man, a journey he began back in 2015. As the name suggests, Quantumania will be a wild ride, epic in scope, but also grounded emotionally.
Peyton Reed, the director for the first two Ant-Man movies, will return for the third. “We were thrilled to get to do a third Ant-Man movie and do a trilogy,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “And we knew if we were going to do that we wanted to do some things differently.”
"We really wanted to take a hard left turn and make a movie that was even more epic. But still progress the story of these family dynamics and everything that’s going on between Scott and Hope and Cassie."
Thanks to his obligations as an Avenger and the catastrophic events of Endgame, Scott Lang has missed out on years of bonding with his daughter. Expect this to play into the plot heavily. “Cassie is now 18 years old and maybe Scott doesn’t quite know how to relate to her as an adult because he lost those five years because of the events of Endgame,” Reed said.
Kang the Conqueror conquers in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The overall premise of Quantumania is pretty cool. The main villain of the movie, Kang the Conqueror, is poised to become the new Thanos-level big bad of the MCU. He already made his MCU debut in Loki, played by Jonathan Majors. However, Quantumania will mark his big screen debut.
"We also knew that we wanted to put our heroes up against a very, very formidable opponent. I grew up reading the comics and I knew the character of Kang the Conqueror, who’s one of the big, big bad characters in the comics, so to be able to put up our heroes against Kang the Conqueror was a huge thing for us. We went big and we also went small."
Quantumania is merely the beginning of Kang’s reign of terror over the Marvel universe. During San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently laid out plans for the next few years of Marvel Studios projects, and one such movie was Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, due out in 2025.
According to Feige, we can expect to see Jonathan Majors as multiple different variants of the character. “It’s really impressive what Jonathan Majors is able to do, and all the different incarnations, Variants, if you will, of Kang that we will see him do. It’s really pretty cool,” he told ComicBook.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania premieres on February 17, 2023.
