Joker took the world by storm when it came out in 2019, becoming the first R-rated film to earn over a billion dollars at the international box office and netting Joaquin Phoenix a Best Actor Oscar. Now, a sequel is on the way: Joker: Folie à Deux, which refers to a mental disorder that affects two people.

When you think of the Joker sharing his crazy with someone, your mind immediately goes to Harley Quinn. Lady Gaga will play her in this movie, which will be a musical, which sounds wonderfully off-the-wall. Whether the movie is a disaster or a triumph, it has my attention.

And now, Deadline has revealed when the movie will be coming out: Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.

Joker: Folie à Deux release date

This news comes at the same time as Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it has cancelled its Batgirl movie, which was scheduled to be put out on HBO Max. People are still sorting through the reasons behind that decision, but Deadline thinks that part of it is that the new management at Warner Bros. Discovery wants to build up DC’s theatrical brand. Joker was a huge hit and Batgirl was probably going to be a middling success at best, so the one gets a sequel and the other gets the boot.

Or at least that’s one theory. Warner Bros. Discovery already spent nearly $100 million on Batgirl, so it seems very strange to pitch the whole thing. There’s probably more going on here; if the rumors of Warner Bros. Discovery cutting up to 70% of HBO Max staff are true, the movie may just be a casualty of new Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav’s new vision for the company, a vision that includes a lot less scripted content.

But Joker 2 is happening, for now. See you in October of 2024.
