The Rick Grimes series will be “an epic and insane love story”

During this year’s The Walking Dead panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira made a surprise appearance. They stopped by to finally reveal that, after a long wait, we were going to get a spinoff show featuring Rick Grimes and Michonne. Both of these characters have been off the show for a while, and fans are eager to see what they’re up to.

Unfortunately, it will not be a trilogy movie series like originally planned, but it’s something. “There’s going to be six episodes on AMC+ airing in 2023, so next year there’s going to be a lot more to talk about,” said Lincoln in Hall H. “I personally can’t wait to get my cowboys boots back on and get the band back together.” We can’t wait either!

No more details were spilled at the time, but franchise boss Scott M. Gimple said a few more things during AMC’s Sunday night The Walking Dead Universe Preview 2022 special, per Entertainment Weekly. “It’s been a lot of fun to work on,” he said. “I’ve been working on it very, very deeply with Danai and with Andy, and we continue to work on it pretty much every day together with some Walking Dead vets and some great new voices.”

"It’s an epic love story. But it’s an epic and insane love story. These are two people that have been separated for a very long time. They’ve lived whole other existences and they have to find themselves again, let alone each other. And it’s hopefully going to be mind-blowing."

Where has Rick been since he flew away in that helicopter in season 9? What has he been up to, why didn’t he go back to his family? I can’t wait to finally learn the answers to those questions, and I am just so happy that Rick and Michonne are finally returning. It’s about dang time!
