Hard as it is to believe, there was a time when Giancarlo Esposito wasn’t known for playing villains; go watch him as a loudmouth nerd in 1989’s Do The Right Thing if you want to have your mind blown. But ever since his turn as mild-mannered drug kingpin Gus Fring in Breaking Bad, he’s specialized in villains. He’s the ice cold Stan Edgar in The Boys, he voices Lex Luthor in the Harley Quinn show, and he plays the merciless Moff Gideon on The Mandalorian.

The Mandalorian season 2 ended with Gideon defeated and taken prisoner, but I think we all know he’s going to find some way to cause trouble. Based on how enthusiastic Esposito is about the upcoming third season, he may cause a lot. “I got to tell you, just to share something with you without spoiling anything,” he said at the Thomas J. Henry’s Superhero Car Show & Comic Con, per ComicBook.com. “Season 3 of The Mandalorian is off the chain! You’ll be amazed!”

There’s no release date for The Mandalorian season 3 just yet, although there’s plenty of Star Wars stuff to entertain you between now and then. Star Wars: Andor premieres on Disney+ on September 21.

Giancarlo Esposito wants to play Professor X in the Marvel Cinematic Universe

So Esposito is officially part of the Star Wars universe…and The Boys universe, and the Breaking Bad universe, and the DC universe. Are there any mountains he hasn’t climbed? What about Marvel?

“So, I have not worked for Marvel yet,” Esposito said at the convention, per Cinemablend. “I’ve been in a room with them and talked with them, and to answer your question, I think what they do is on the lines of that mythological journey that Joe Campbell talked about, who happened to be a friend of George Lucas that George Lucas put into his stories. They do the same thing. … So, there’s been talk of Magneto. There’s been talk of Dr. Freeze. There has been talk of, who else are they talking about over there? Oh, Doom!”

"And there is Professor X. Pick one? I’m going to go for something that is a little bit different. I’m going to go and put it out in the universe that it is Professor X."

I’m sure Esposito would kill one of those iconic villains, but at this point I agree that the most surprising thing for him to do would be to play someone…nice. And Professor X can still be kinda cold and remote, but at least there’s some warmth there. Bring on the difference.

We don’t know if Esposito will ever be a part of the MCU, but I’d bet money he’ll show up sooner or later.
