She-Hulk director teases “huge” opening episode
By Ariba Bhuvad
This Thursday, Marvel fans can look forward to the premiere of She-Hulk starring Tatiana Maslany. We’ll also see the return of Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, or rather, “Smart Hulk.” Hulk will guide his cousin through the ins and outs of being a strong green monster person. It’s not easy, especially when it comes to controlling one’s rage.
The promos have teased a lot of fun ahead, including the return of Daredevil (Charlie Cox). I wasn’t too excited about the series previously, but it has caught my interest. Between the fourth wall breaking, the comedy, and the return of old characters, I think we’re in for a treat. Not everything has to be a multi-versal adventure, and I will embrace whatever She-Hulk has in store for us.
In an interview with TVLine, director Kat Coiro was asked what the “biggest” episode of the nine-episode season would be. Apparently, fans can expect big things from the premiere.
The She-Hulk premiere episode will be the “biggest”
According to Coiro, the first episode was interesting one for everyone involved, including Mark Ruffalo. “Well, the opening origin is huge, because we have two Hulks in long dialogue scenes, which is something that Hulks are not historically used to doing,” she said. “Mark [Ruffalo] definitely had an adjustment. Because usually his Hulk is off on the sidelines, or in an action sequence, or has only a couple pages of dialogue. And this was five-page scenes.”
Five page scenes? Ruffalo must have been ecstatic! “Luckily, we had Mark the whole time,” Coiro confirmed. “The real philosophy behind the VFX is to capture as much of the actor’s real performance in situ. And part of my job is to set up the set so that it almost feels like they’re normal actors, even though they’re wearing mo-cap suits and have cameras in their faces.”
Maslany and Ruffalo had to stand on platforms wearing their motion-capture suits so they were at the “right eyelines and the right height.” The whole thing gave Ruffalo a great opportunity to shine as the Hulk in a new way.
I’m super excited about the interaction between two Hulks and to see how this series fits into the larger Marvel picture. It may not be what we’re used to, but I think it will be a fun series to follow.
She-Hulk premieres Thursday, August 18, on Disney+.
