Is House of the Dragon a sequel or a prequel to Game of Thrones?

House of the Dragon, HBO’s new Game of Thrones show, premieres this weekend! Get ready to return to Westeros.
That said, don’t expect to see any of your favorite characters from the first show. Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Tyrion Lannister…unless House of the Dragon goes in a very surprising direction, none of them will be showing up here.
That’s because House of the Dragon is a prequel series that takes place some 200 years before the original show. The only person from Game of Thrones who may already be alive at this point is Melisandre, and I wouldn’t count on her turning up.
House of the Dragon takes place around 200 years before Game of Thrones
House of the Dragon will pick up with the Targaryen family back when they’re at the height of their power, their rule uncontested. The only thing that could bring them down is themselves…but surely there’s no way that will happen.
We’ll meet a whole new crop of characters, a lot of them with radioactive blonde hair: there’s King Viserys I Targaryen, his daughter Rhaenrya and his brother Daemon, his Hand Otto Hightower and his daughter Rheanyra, his cousin Rhaenys Targaryen and her husband Corlys Velaryon. I hope you like learning names.
And if what you want is more of the characters you already know, don’t worry; HBO is working on a little something involving that, as well:
