House of the Dragon is right around the corner, and we will be seeing a lot of new dragons and their riders. One of the main things George R.R. Martin and the showrunners wanted to emphasize is the distinct characteristics and personalities of each dragon. It has been confirmed that we will see 19 dragons throughout the show and meet nine of them in season 1. Here are four prominent dragons that we will likely see a lot of in the first season.
Caraxes
Caraxes, also called the “Blood Wyrm,” is a red male dragon ridden by Prince Daemon Targaryen. Daemon is the volatile younger brother of the King Viserys I Targaryen. Like his rider, Caraxes has a bit of a mean streak and “loves to burn things,” according to his previous owner. Thanks to the trailers, we know that Caraxes’ physical appearance is a bit different than the other dragons. He has an elongated neck and a second set of smaller wings towards his tail.
Daemon will be one of the big players in this show. We will surely see him and Caraxes in action during season 1.
Syrax
Syrax is a yellow dragon ridden by Rhaenyra Targaryen, the eldest child and only daughter of King Viserys. She is large and powerful but rarely tested in battle. She’s about as domesticated as a dragon can get, meaning she can still rip pretty much anything apart but probably won’t fare well against a war horse like Caraxes.
Sunfyre
Sunfyre is the mount of Aegon II, one of the sons of King Viserys. He has golden scales and is described as one of the most beautiful dragons to grace the skies of Westeros. In the books, we know that the fire dragons breathe can sometimes reflect the color of their scales, and this is the case with Sunfyre who breathes bright golden flames. Sunfyre will be heavily involved in several battles that will likely take place in future seasons. But we will likely see him by the end of season 1.
Vhagar
Vhagar is the largest and most battle-hardened living dragon we will see in the show. At the time of House of the Dragon, she is over 100 years old and was one of the original the dragons that Aegon I and his sisters used to conquer Westeros. At that time, she was ridden by Aegon’s sister Visenya.
Since the conquest, Vhagar has had several riders but will be ridden by Laena Velaryon in House of the Dragon. Vhagar is the most formidable dragon during this time period. She will have some fantastic scenes throughout the series.
