At Star Wars celebration in May, it was not only announced that Sabine Wren would be appearing in the upcoming Ahsoka TV show on Disney+, but that Natasha Liu Bordizzo will be playing her.
Wren is a Mandalorian bounty hunter turned rebel fighter and a main character in the animated show Star Wars: Rebels. During the show, she came into possession of the Darksaber, which eventually found its way to Din Djarin in The Mandalorian.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bordizzo expressed her excitement about joining the Star Wars universe. “Is it too much to say that I’m filming my dream role right now?” she asked. “It’s the truth, I haven’t thought about anything past this project yet because I don’t want it to end. It’s the best job I’ve ever done for so many reasons. It’s so fulfilling on so many levels, and it’s only gotten better as we’ve gotten into it. So I’m very excited about what we’re creating.”
Sabine Wren actor inspired by Star Wars franchise
Wren was last seen during the final moments of Star Wars Rebels, when she and Ahsoka Tano prepared to embark on a journey to find their missing friend Ezra Bridger. The Ahsoka TV show will likely portray this mission and hopefully show us what happened to Bridger after the end of Rebels.
Bordizzo said she watched a lot of Rebels to prepare for the role, but said that the live-action show will have a fresh take on the character. Through her homework, Bordizzo found several qualities about Wren that she admired:
"Her unbelievable bravery, spirit and swag, amidst all the challenge and heartache of everything going on. It sounds so over the top for me to say what I’m about to say, but I truly mean it. In my life, when I’m facing a challenge, I just think about the general spirit of the franchise and taking on challenges with a bit of positivity, a bit of humor and then being able to move on. So it’ been something that I have learned a lot from, as I’m playing the role itself."
Bordizzo learned that she was cast as Sabine while on the set of Day Shift, a vampire thriller starring Jamie Foxx that recently came out on Netflix. During her short career, she has also had prominent roles in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny and The Society.
The Ahsoka show will be the first time we see many beloved Star Wars characters in live action. Although we do not know who is playing her, Hera Syndulla is confirmed to appear in Ahsoka alongside her droid Chopper. Both were main characters in Rebels alongside Sabine Wren.
