Season 4 of Stranger Things was undoubtedly Netflix’s biggest hit of the year, creating buzz like few shows have since Game of Thrones went off the air back in 2019. Stranger Things 4 was bigger and more ambitious than anything that the series had done before, with episodes that ran over an hour long (and a finale that was over two) as well as the introduction of the show’s big bad: Vecna, aka One, aka Henry Creel. Played by Jamie Campbell Bower, Vecna has become Stranger Things’ most compelling villain, in part because it was revealed that he was behind many of the events from previous seasons.

Season 4 ended with our young heroes from Hawkins trying to give Vecna the axe, but the villain slipped away. Moreover, his master plan to bring down the wall between the real world and the Upside Down succeeded. When the dust settled on season 4, the Upside Down was merging with Hawkins.

Jamie Campbell Bower wants to explore Vecna and Will’s connection in Stranger Things season 5

The upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things will be its last, and there are things fans want to see before the curtain falls for the final time For instance, fans are clamoring to learn more about Will Byers’ connection to Vecna and Upside Down; just look at all the fan art if you need proof. Stranger Things began with Will being spirited away to the Upside Down by a Demogorgon, then he was possessed by the Mind Flayer (which we have since learned is an extension of Vecna’s will). When Will returned to Hawkins in season 4, the hairs on the back of his neck rose to remind us of that connection.

Viewers aren’t the only ones who want to see more of Will and Vecna’s lingering connection. Speaking to NME, Jamie Campbell Bower said he’s on board as well. “I think Vecna and Will have a connection that’s yet to be explored. As a fan, I’d be interested to see more of that.”

Regardless of whether Vecna will be haunting Will in particular, he’ll have it out for the group in season 5. “[Vecna’s] pissed, he’s properly vexed,” Campbell Bower said. “I don’t think he’s slunk off licking his wounds in misery. He’s rebuilding, and he’s out for blood. It’s like, you’ve really f**king pushed the buttons now, that classic Jason Voorhees thing – you’ve made a big mistake.”

Given how dangerous the Hawkins crew’s run-in with Vecna was in season 4, that’s pretty ominous. It’s going to get worse for them before the end.

Stranger Things 5 is currently being written and is expected to consist of eight episodes. Here’s hoping we’ll see it by 2024.
