The ’70s and ’80s produced a lot of horror movie icons, from Michael Myers to Jason Voorhees to Freddy Krueger. Pinhead from the Hellraiser movies was probably the trippiest of them all…yes, even more than Krueger. The leader of a group of extra-dimensional demons known as Cenobites, Pinhead is summoned whenever someone has the unfortunate luck to find and solve a mysterious puzzle box (technically called the Lament Configuration), after which he and his colleagues help them explore new realms of torture and pain.

The movies ride high on freaky imagery and have endured for years. Now, director David Bruckner is making a new Hellraiser film for Hulu, coming out in time for Halloween. Pinhead was played for years by Doug Bradley, but in the new movie, he’ll be played by Jamie Clayton, who you might remember from the Netflix show Sense8.

Bradley himself is looking forward to Clayton’s take: “Loved Sense8! Disappointed we didn’t get another season,” he said on Twitter. “Contrary to any rumors, I am fully supportive of your casting and looking forward to your performance!” And now, we have our first look at Clayton in action:

Original Pinhead actor excited to see Jamie Clayton’s new take on the character

“What Doug Bradley did with the character is so iconic,” Bruckner told Entertainment Weekly. “We didn’t want to do a Doug Bradley impression, we just didn’t think that’s possible to do. There will be suffering, but you’re going to get a sense of what Pinhead’s desires might be in a way that hits a little different.”

Speaking at Silver Screen Con, Bradley was all in on Clayton’s casting. “Everything about Hellraiser has always been transgressive. Everything, always, from start to finish,” he said. “I do like to point out that I did wear a skirt as Pinhead.”

"I don’t know Jamie. Of course, they’ve taken even a little bit of a wrinkle in that, because Jamie is transgender. I’m not familiar with her recent work, but there was a science fiction series on Netflix several years ago called Sense8, which I was quite a fan of. Jamie was in that, and I really, really liked her performance in that. The thing that will make the movie work or not is none of that. It’s the story. If the story is strong, the movie will work. That’s why Hellraiser has succeeded; not because the Cenobites are gloriously f***ed up and so is Julia [the twisted widow, played by Clare Higgins, in the 1987 original movie], which they all are…All of that is true, but the story is what makes Hellraiser work, so we’ll see what happens."

That’s all true, although the Cenobites being “gloriously f***ed up” has definitely endured in the popular imagination. It’s important for them to be as gnarly as possible, and we can rest assured that the new Hellraiser movie will give us some memorable ones.

As for the story of this new movie, it revolves around Riley (Odessa A’zion), a young woman struggling with addiction who comes across that damned puzzle box.

Hellraiser comes out on Hulu on October 7.
