Chaswick Boseman earns an Emmy for his vocal performance in Marvel’s What If…? The Marvel actor passed in 2020.

The Creative Arts Emmys went down over the weekend, and plenty of people walked home with little golden statues. A Black Lady Sketch Show, Drag Race, Lizzo’s Watch Out for the Big GrrrlsLast Week Tonight with John Oliver, Luci and Desi and the Love Death + Robots episode “Jibaro” all walked away with two Emmys apiece. Netflix’s animated series Arcane got four Emmys.  The Beatles: Get Back and Adele: One Night Only were the big winners with five awards apiece.

One of the most moving moments of the night came when Chadwick Boseman, who passed in 2020, won an award for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance for playing T’Challa in an episode of Marvel’s What If…?

Boseman’s wife, Taylor Simone Ledward, accepted the award. “[W]hat a beautifully aligned moment it really is that one of the last things he would work on would not only be revisting a character that was so important to him and his career and to the world, but also that it be an exploration of something new, diving into a new potential future — particularly with everything he spoke about purpose and finding the reason that you are here on the planet on this very time,” she said. “You can’t understand your purpose unless you’re willing to ask, ‘What if,’ unless you’re willing to say, ‘What if the universe is conspiring in my favor, what if it’s me?’”

"Thank you so much for the honor — Chad would be so honored, and I’m honored on his behalf."

Other nominees included F. Murray Abraham (Moon Knight), Julie Andrews (Bridgerton), Maya Rudolph (Big Mouth), Stanley Tucci (Central Park), Jessica Walter (Archer) and Jeffrey Wright (What If…?). This was Boseman’s first Emmy nomination and first win.

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards air on September 12, 7:00 p.m. on NBC. Meanwhile, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be out on November 11. Boseman will not be in it, but his character T’Challa will be much referenced, and missed.

Next. House of the Dragon, Episode 3: “Second of His Name” is a moody treat. dark
