Tonight on the new episode of House of the Dragon, “Second of His Name,” Rhaenyra Targaryen encountered an elderly woman in a tent; you remember her, she was the one with the pug. This was Lady Redwyne, and she had a lot to say about Rhaenyra’s father, King Viserys. She openly criticizes the king right in front of her daughter, which is a ballsy move. You probably won’t be surprised to learn that she’s an ancestor of Lady Olenna Tyrell, another older woman who had zero problems speaking her mind.
Lady Olenna Tyrell is…well, a Tyrell. But she wasn’t born that way. Lady Olenna’s original surname was Redwyne; she married into the Tyrell family later. This makes the Lady Redwyne we meet in House of the Dragon her distant ancestor.
Of course, it’s unlikely that Olenna would ever allow herself to be shut down the way Rhaenyra shut down her great great (etc.) grandmother. Boldness runs in the family, but Olenna also knew how to pick her battles better.
Lady Redwyne is an ancestor of Lady Olenna Tyrell from Game of Thrones
House Redwyne makes its seat in the Arbor, on an island off the southwestern tip of the Reach. The Arbor is known for producing excellent wine. By the time of Game of Thrones, the Redwynes have the largest fleet in the Seven Kingdoms. At the time of House of the Dragon, that honor goes to House Velaryon.
We may see this Lady Redwyne again. Many houses will get involved in the wars to come. Until then, it was fun to see a bit of Lady Olenna back on our screens.
