Matt Smith has been tearing it up on House of the Dragon as the strong-willed, ruthless Daemon Targaryen. But before he tried to take over the Iron Throne, Smith traveled through time and space on Doctor Who. His tenure as the Eleventh Doctor was one of the most memorable in the history of the show, right up there alongside David Tennant’s run as the Tenth Doctor. I loved Smith’s seasons, and I’m always hoping he will return for a cameo.

It turns out that Smith is right there with me! Promoting House of the Dragon to Indulge, he looked back on his Doctor Who experience “with great affection” and called it “a real adventure.”

And why wouldn’t he? He got to work alongside Karen Gillan, Arthur Darvill, and Jenna Coleman during his time as the Eleventh Doctor. It’s fun to see where everyone has ended up all these years later. Between the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the DCTV universe, and The Sandman, all three of them have kept quite busy since Doctor Who.

Matt Smith has fond memories of being on Doctor Who

“I was very lucky that I got the opportunity to work with brilliant friends like Karen [Gillan], Arthur [Darvill] and Jenna [Coleman]. We had such great chemistry and we had such a great time making that show,” said Smith. “I’m so proud, to this day, to be part of that world. There is a huge amount of pressure that comes with it, just as there is with House of the Dragon, but it’s very rewarding.”

I hope Smith makes a surprise appearance in next year’s Doctor Who 60th anniversary special. He returned for the 50th anniversary special, “Day of the Doctor,” so there’s reason to hope. David Tennant and Catherine Tate have already been confirmed to appear.

Smith also mentioned that he spoke to Ncuti Gatwa, who will replace Jodie Whittaker as the next Doctor in season 14. He wished him well and said that Gatwa doesn’t need his advice, and I agree. I think Gatwa will be just fine and step into the role effortlessly.

As far as Matt Smith goes, there is no confirmation that he will be a part of the Doctor Who anniversary special. However, I’m cautiously optimistic that we’ll see him in his signature bow tie soon.
