She-Hulk review, Episode 4: “Is This Not Real Magic?”
By Ariba Bhuvad
She-Hulk has been an interesting topic of conversation among my friends and I. I find that many people aren’t really into it and haven’t been able to get past the CGI of it all. I, on the other hand, have been thoroughly enjoying it.
I like that the show is not taking itself too seriously. Between the wacky plots and the breaking of the fourth wall, She-Hulk is the comedic break we all need right now!
This week’s episode focuses on Jennifer (Tatiana Maslany) attempting to traverse the world of online app dating. She gives it a go as Jennifer but ultimately has to resort to using her She-Hulk persona to get matches. It’s tough out there, folks!
Along with that, we get more of Wong (Benedict Wong) as he tries to deal with a magician using the Mystic Arts to perform stage magic. Donny Blaze (Rhys Coiro) was formerly a student at Kamar-Taj but went rogue.
And with that, let’s talk about the major moments from this week’s episode of She-Hulk! Major SPOILERS ahead!
She-Hulk and Wong
After last week’s encounter with the Wrecking Crew, Jennifer finds herself immersed in all things Kamar-Taj as she helps Wong deal with a rogue former student. Donny Blaze has been using the Mystic Arts at his magic shows. He’s not very talented as a normal magician, so opening up portals to other worlds is how he gets attention. (Side note: I was really hoping that one of his portals would result in some unexpected cameo. I know that sounds greedy because we’ve already had so many, but can you blame me after Spider-Man: No Way Home? Those portals just get me hyped!)
During one of Blaze’s shows, one of the attendees, Madisynn (Patty Guggenheim), is pulled into the portal and ends up in Kamar-Taj with Wong. He was watching The Sopranos , and Madisynn completely ruins the experience by giving him major spoilers. Not cool, Madisynn!
Wong asks for Jen’s help in suing Donny Blaze for negligence, although Madisynn’s drunken testimony isn’t particularly convincing. Later, Donny opens up a portal to a world of demons that make their way into our world. Jen is pulled out of one of the best dates of her life to help, and all is taken care of. But this brings me to the actual point of the episode: Jen’s dating life.
Jen tries online dating
Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) finds out that Jen made an online dating profile and gets to work swiping right on every person. The hope is that someone of substance will pop up, and Jen will find her happily ever after. Although Nikki urges Jen to use her She-Hulk persona for the profile, Jen wants to be herself. She’s already forced to be She-Hulk at work; let’s leave it out of her personal life.
Jen goes on a series of horrible dates, each one worse than the last. As much as Jen wants to ignore the She-Hulk part of herself, she quickly realizes that presenting as She-Hulk will get her better matches. As soon as she changes her profile picture and begins swiping, the matches come rolling in.
Jen ends up matching with a pediatric oncologist (Michel Curiel), who is seemingly too good to be true. He’s sweet, he’s ridiculously good-looking and very attentive. He even understands when Jen gets pulled away by Wong to handle the Blaze situation.
However, he loses major points the morning after when he sees Jen in her human form and practically runs out of the house. Not cool, dude, not cool at all!
She-Hulk Season 1, Episode 4 ending explained
This episode was all sorts of fun, but there was one thing in particular I couldn’t get enough of: Wong and Madisynn’s newly formed friendship. They even got a post-credit scene! It was them watching This Is Us, probably because she kept ruining The Sopranos for him. I’m here for this friendship!
This week’s episode ends with a plot twist as Jen is served with papers. Apparently, Titania (Jameela Jamil) is suing her for using the name She-Hulk, which she apparently trademarked. I’m hoping that we finally get to see Titania again soon!
Speaking of people we need to see again, when is Daredevil (Charlie Cox) making an appearance?! I’m anxiously waiting for this to happen, and the moment it does, I will officially make She-Hulk my favorite show of all time (not really, but I do love Daredevil).
See you all next week!
