Eleanor Matsuura (Yumiko) mulls the ending of The Walking Dead
By Ashley Hurst
After being the number one zombie TV show in the world for over a decade, The Walking Dead is ending in just a couple of months. It’s been going on so long that even actors introduced in season 9 have been involved for four years at this point. Take Eleanor Matsuura (Yumiko), who cannot believe that her journey with the series is already coming to a close.
Yumiko was introduced in the episode after Rick Grimes departed, alongside Magna, Luke, Connie, and Kelly. She plays a pretty significant role in season 11, essentially taking over Michonne’s storyline from the comics. She becomes a high-ranking lawyer inside the Commonwealth, spending most of her time around governor Pamela Milton.
The Walking Dead cast has always seemed close, and Matsuura is going to miss it. “I don’t know if it has [sunk in], actually, you know?” she told Digital Spy. “I think when you’ve been on something for such a significant amount of time, and the show has been running, itself, for such a huge amount of time – I just keep half-expecting that I’ll be going back to Georgia next year, to carry on shooting, because that’s been such a huge part of my life for the last four years.
"So it’s strange. I have a feeling that I might not process it for a while [laughs]. I look at it like in five years’ time, I’m going to wake up, and be like, ‘Oh, wow. The Walking Dead’s really finished! OK’."
Who knows, perhaps she’ll turn up in a future spinoff…if Yumiko survives the season. AMC softened the blow of the main series ending by quickly announcing a slate of spinoffs that will continue the story. For instance, there’s a Daryl (Norman Reedus) show on the way, a Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) show called Dead City, as well as the much-anticipated return of Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). The mother show may be ending, but the franchise is far from over.
Samantha Morton responds to inconsistencies in Tales of The Walking Dead
AMC’s latest Walking Dead spinoff series Tales of The Walking Dead is here. The anthology series tells six standalone stories, unique tales set within the undead world. Every episode focuses on new characters, except for Episode 3, “Dee,” which goes back and tells the origin story of Whisperer leader Alpha.
In the episode, we see Dee shortly before she gets involved with the zombie skin-wearing Whisperers. There’s no Beta. It’s just her trying to survive the harsh environment with her daughter Lydia. Some fans have pointed out that the new episode is out of step with what we saw of Alpha’s backstory in flashbacks in season 10 of the main show. But fear not, Morton can assure you that all the pieces fall into place.
“There’s no inconsistency at all. I was very heavily involved in the making of it, in the development of it with Channing [Powell] – there’s no inconsistency,” Morton told Digital Spy. “I think that the episode is called Dee, and that says it all.”
The final season of The Walking Dead returns for its eight remaining episodes on October 2 on AMC. It’s almost over!
