Ever since The Walking Dead first premiered back in 2010, fans have been pondering how the series would wrap up. Who will survive to the end? Will there be a cure? Turns out, just a couple of months before the show concludes its eleventh and final season, the writers are still working on a possible post-credits scene.

The Walking Dead has sparingly used post-credits scenes throughout its run. The most recent one came in the season finale of spinoff The Walking Dead: World Beyond, where we saw the return of Dr. Edwin Jenner (Noah Emmerich), who is on a video call to someone in France. It appears that the zombie variant in Europe is much more dangerous than the undead we see in the main show. The dead there are physically stronger and faster:

Season 11, Episode 19 is titled “Variant,” which suggests that we’ll soon learn more about the new strain of zombie virus.

If The Walking Dead series finale gets a post-credits scene, there’s no doubt that it will be game-changing. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, AMC’s chief content officer Scott Gimple, hinted that the team is still working on something, despite filming wrapping in April. “Will there be a tag scene?” Gimple said. “I just got to say, maybe. We’re up to some things, so maybe.”

What might we see in The Walking Dead post-credits scene?

The most obvious thing to do would be to bring back Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). The series began with Rick, so it would only make sense for it to end with him. It’d be an instant crowd pleaser. Plus, next year AMC will air a six-episode miniseries following Rick and Michonne (Danai Gurira). A little teaser in the credits would certainly help build hype.

When asked about Rick Grimes making an appearance in the final season, Gimple played it coy: “I’d never tell you that in a million years.” So let’s take that as a maybe.

In addition, there’s also an untitled “Daryl Dixon” show in development, as well as Dead City; a spinoff following Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan). It’s possible that we could see one of those get teased, too. All will become clear when the finale airs on November 20. One thing is for sure: the series finale won’t be the end of the franchise.

The Walking Dead returns for its final eight episodes on October 2 on AMC, with new episodes dropping weekly. As always, AMC+ subscribers can get new episodes one week early.
