Why should legacy fantasy brands like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings have all the fun? A new fantasy show called Swordplay is coming.
Fantasy is having a moment right now: House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, The Witcher. Want Hollywood to say yes to something? Find some fantasy books and say you want to adapt them. It seems to be working.
Fantasy is so big that Hollywood is even taking original ideas, something it usually hates. For instance, Deadline reports that Macro Television Studios is set to produce Swordplay, based on an original idea from Jonathan and Josh Baker. I would summarize what the show is about but I’m not sure I understand it, so I’ll just quote the description from Deadline:
"In Swordplay, a sheltered teen and his newly befriended Hypebeast crew lace up their retro kicks and go for glory with an ancient sword used to defeat otherworldly creatures on the streets of LA."
Just what is a Hypebeast crew, exactly? Isn’t Hypebeast a men’s clothing line? And the description also mentions “retro kicks.” I’m beginning to suspect the show is a glorified shoe commercial. But I’m probably getting ahead of myself.
And Macro did find someone impressive to serve as showrunner: Glen Mazzara, best known for his work as a producer on The Shield and The Walking Dead. We don’t know when he’ll debut Swordplay, nor on what network or streaming service it will air, but we’ll pump our retro kicks in anticipation.
