At Disney’s D23 expos last weekend, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron was notably absent from the company’s release schedule.

Despite sharing a name with the group of Rebel star fighter pilots founded by Luke Skywalker during the Galactic Civil War, Rogue Squadron is reportedly supposed to focus on a new group of pilots in an original story, not an adaptation or remake. The film was announced in 2020 and has been in pre-production for years with little details surfacing since its development began.

Patty Jenkins’ Rogue Squadron movie no longer has a release date

While the movie has not been officially canceled, its original release date of December 2023 will likely not be fulfilled. Rogue Squadron’s director Patty Jenkins directed both of DC’s Wonder Woman movies, and has a third one on the way.

During an interview with Vanity Fair in May, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy gave an ambiguous update on Rogue Squadron.

"Rogue Squadron… we kind of pushed off to the side for the moment. Patty is developing the script further. Then we will talk about how that connects to the central spine that we’re working on."

All we can do at this point is speculate what is making this film take so long. It may be as simple as Lucasfilm wanting to get their next film right, considering their shaky track record on the big screen in recent years. However, the focus of the Star Wars saga has overwhelmingly shifted to television, with the massive success of The Mandalorian steering that ship.

The only other Star Wars film confirmed to be in development is one helmed by Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Watiti. Again, we have virtually no details on that film either including no set release date.
